SHAH ALAM: The Marine Police Force (PPM) Region One has crippled a cigarette smuggling syndicate, seizing untaxed cigarettes worth RM1.78 million in two separate operations.
Its commander, ACP Jaffri Bidin, said the operations were conducted under Ops Taring Landai early yesterday.
In the first operation, a 24-year-old man driving a white van was arrested near the Saujana Putera Toll Plaza at the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE).
The second operation saw a 26-year-old van driver detained at Kilometre 5.2 of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) heading towards the Bukit Raja Toll Plaza.
“Upon inspecting both vehicles, we found boxes of various types of untaxed cigarettes,” Jaffri said in a statement today.
He added that the two men failed to provide any documents for the items they were transporting.
The seized items were handed over to investigating officers from the Kuala Langat and Shah Alam police headquarters.
The two suspects will be investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for illegal possession of uncustomed goods.
