Melaka’s PPDK disability centres seek one-off state grants to expand training and services, aiming to empower OKU towards greater independence and quality of life

ALOR GAJAH: The Melaka state government is being urged to consider providing a one-off special grant to the state’s Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PPDK) to strengthen their functions and services for persons with disabilities (OKU).

State Executive Councillor for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan said the centres currently receive operational funds from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for salaries, utilities and premises rental.

He said a special allocation is crucial for the PPDK to implement more programmes and activities to empower various aspects, including learning.

“We want each PPDK to be more competitive in empowering OKU through various trainings and skills, while polishing their talents so they can be independent and lead a better life,” he told reporters after the Alor Gajah District PPDK Asnaf Breaking of Fast ceremony 2026 yesterday.

Separately, Fairul Nizam said more Senior Citizens Activity Centres (PAWE) need to be established in Melaka, with at least one in each state constituency.

He said this would foster a healthy and active lifestyle through religious, health, recreational and educational activities.

“Through the centre, senior citizens can do various activities, socialise and get moral support so that their lives, especially for retirees, are filled and utilised better and with more quality,” he said.

At the event, 137 OKU individuals were celebrated with contributions of food kits and festive money to enliven their Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
