KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for nine states, with heavy rain and strong winds expected to persist until 7pm Friday.

In a statement issued at 4.30pm, MetMalaysia said adverse weather is forecast to affect Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Johor and Sabah.

In Kedah, affected areas include Kubang Pasu, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu. In Perak, the warning covers Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, as well as Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Kampar, Batang Padang and Muallim.

In Kelantan, thunderstorms are expected in Jeli, Tanah Merah, Machang, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang, while in Terengganu, the affected districts include Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman.

In Pahang, warnings apply to Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Temerloh, Kuantan, Bera and Rompin. In Selangor, affected areas include Klang and Petaling, while in Johor, Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru are listed.

In Sabah, the alert covers interior districts such as Nabawan, Keningau and Tambunan, the west coast including Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Ranau, as well as the districts of Tawau, Kunak, Lahad Datu and Sandakan.

MetMalaysia advised the public to remain alert to the risk of flash floods and wind-related damage, and to avoid outdoor and maritime activities during the warning period. — Bernama
