Transport Ministry to increase authorised workshops for speed limiter installation as compliance among heavy vehicles remains low at 20%.

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Transport is working to increase the number of authorised workshops for installing speed limitation devices in heavy vehicles. This move aims to boost compliance, which currently stands at only about 20% since the rule was introduced.

Minister Anthony Loke urged the industry to take the requirement seriously. He confirmed that enforcement actions by the Road Transport Department will continue against non-compliant vehicles.

The updated list of authorised workshops will be made available nationwide for easier access. Loke announced the staged enforcement of SLDs for commercial vehicles beginning October 1, 2025.

The initial phase targets express buses, tour buses, and goods vehicles over 3,500 kg registered from January 1, 2015. The device limits a vehicle’s maximum speed to 90 km/h as a safety measure.

Loke stated the enforcement aims to reduce fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles and improve overall road safety. The SLD is a safety device integrated into the engine control system.
