“Fresh grad who has only been working for 4 – 5 months, earning RM4,500. Applied for a new job and asked for RM6,000.”

A Malaysian recruiter’s Threads post has recently gone viral after sharing a story of a fresh graduate who asked for a steep pay raise despite working just a few months.

The fresh graduate who had been only working for four to five with a salary of RM4,500 had applied for a new job with a requested salary of RM6,000.

“Lol, there’s another fresh grad who has only been working for 4–5 months, earning RM4,500. Applied for a new job and asked for RM6,000.”

She claimed that this was the second similar case she had encountered this year.

The candidate informed the human resource team that the RM6,000 salary was negotiable but during the interview, informed that it was not for negotiations.

“After the interview, the manager’s feedback was: overconfident, not well prepared, and unserious.

“The audacity to request RM6,000.

“Must have blindly followed what people say on social media about asking for a 30–40% raise even after working just a few months.”

The post quickly drew comments, with some criticising what they perceive as unrealistic expectations among younger workers.

“This is normal for Gen Z. Don’t spend so much time on them. Their loyalty is only to themselves and money. They don’t realise that most companies, especially SMEs, pay for loyalty. Some companies even sponsor employees to buy houses. But that’s not after working just three or five years. You still have to go through thick and thin for a long time.”

Another commenter, @sil.mohd, questioned the candidate’s capabilities:

“People know A, B, C, D, E, F, G and earn RM6,000. You only know A, B, C but want RM6,000. The skills and capabilities don’t even match.”

Meanwhile, user @kucinggemok2908 appeared surprised by the short duration of employment:

“Hold up. A few months? Not even half a year?”
