Former Malaysian PM Muhyiddin Yassin faces court over RM232.5 million bribery and RM200 million money laundering charges in a high-profile trial.

KUALA LUMPUR: The high-profile trial of former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on corruption and money laundering charges is set to begin.

Proceedings will commence at the High Court here on Monday before judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said the prosecution will first present an opening statement outlining the charges and evidence.

Two witnesses are expected to testify on the first day of the trial.

The prosecution plans to call a total of 30 witnesses over the course of the proceedings.

Judge Noor Ruwena has allocated 29 days for the hearing, scheduled across various dates from March through August 2026.

Muhyiddin faces four counts of using his position to obtain bribes totalling RM232.5 million.

The charges relate to the Jana Wibawa project and involve three companies and an individual, Datuk Azman Yusoff, for the benefit of his former party, Bersatu.

The alleged offences occurred at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya between March 2020 and August 2021.

He also faces three counts of receiving RM200 million in proceeds from illegal activities.

These funds were allegedly deposited into Bersatu’s bank accounts between February 2021 and July 2022.

The charges were brought after the Attorney General’s Chambers dismissed Muhyiddin’s representation to have the seven charges dropped last October.

If convicted of abuse of position, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a substantial fine.

The money laundering charges carry a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment and a heavy fine.
