
National Artiste Day celebrates the contributions of Malaysia’s arts practitioners in shaping culture and uniting society, coinciding with P. Ramlee’s 97th birth anniversary.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry says National Artiste Day symbolises appreciation for the country’s arts community. It honours their role in creating culture and fostering creativity to unite society.
The day is celebrated on March 22, the birth anniversary of legendary artiste the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee. It was gazetted to commemorate the works and contributions of arts practitioners.
The National Archives of Malaysia noted the day also marks P. Ramlee’s 97th birth anniversary. He is remembered as a versatile icon in acting, directing and music.
Born Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak Puteh in Penang, his father was a seafarer from Aceh. His mother was from Kubang Buaya in Butterworth.
P. Ramlee was educated at Sekolah Melayu Kampong Jawa and Penang Free School. He also attended Francis Light English School and the Japanese Navy Academy during the war.
“The spirit of unity that he instilled and showcased in his films has ensured they remain popular to this day,” the National Archives stated in a Facebook post. It added that his songs continue to be loved by all strata of society.
