KUALA TERENGGANU, Feb 24 — Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat today claimed trial to two charges of using his position for the benefit of his family in 2018 and 2020.
The 66-year-old Chukai assemblyman entered his plea at the Sessions Court after the charges were read out before Judge Azman Mustapha, national news agency Bernama reported.
Hanafiah, who is also chairman of Pangkalan Bekalan Kemaman Sdn Bhd, was accused of using his position to provide a bribe for one of his sons at the Epic Berhad office in Pangkalan Bekalan Kemaman near Teluk Kalong, Kemaman, on August 15, 2018.
He was also accused of committing the same act for another son on June 18, 2020, at the same location.
Both charges were made under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 [Act 694], punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act with imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
