
A popular KL nasi lemak chain faces boycott calls after being exposed on Threads for alleged labour violations including unpaid overtime.
A well-known nasi lemak chain in Kuala Lumpur was recently exposed for unethical labour practices, shocking netizens who have called for a boycott of the local franchise.
Posted on Threads, the account owner claimed to have learned about the alleged labour practices from a friend who works at one of the outlets.
The post has since gained traction, receiving over 4,500 likes and 777 comments.
One of the alleged practices exposed by the Threads account was that staff were not being paid overtime without any legitimate reason.
Regarding public holidays, the nasi lemak franchise was alleged to have denied staff leave, including during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri break.
A quick check on the chain eatery’s Facebook page showed that certain outlets were closed during this year’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri break.
The franchise was also accused of allegedly failing to provide any incentives for staff, despite earning significant profits due to its popularity.
Furthermore, the chain eatery was alleged to have terminated staff without any valid reason.
In addition, it was also accused of not providing night shift allowances to staff working at its 24-hour outlets.
The chain was allegedly found to have “often” deducted workers’ salaries, in violation of their actual working hours.
In another allegation, the franchise was said to have terminated local hires to make room for foreign workers as a cost-saving measure. Most of these foreign workers were also alleged to lack valid work permits.
The chain eatery was also exposed for extending employees’ probationary periods beyond six months and failing to increase their salaries after the probationary period.
At the time of writing, the nasi lemak chain has yet to respond to the allegations shared online.
