Penang police arrested three men and seized drugs worth nearly RM3 million, including methamphetamine and a cannabis processing laboratory.
GEORGE TOWN: Police have dismantled a major drug trafficking operation and uncovered a cannabis processing laboratory in Penang, seizing narcotics with an estimated street value of nearly RM3 million.
The first breakthrough came with the arrest of a 27-year-old man acting as a ‘runner’ in Seberang Perai Utara following an operation from March 5 to March 6.
Upon inspecting a bag he was holding, officers found drugs and car keys which led them to a vehicle containing 28 plastic packages of syabu weighing 29,466 grammes.
A subsequent search of another car in the same area uncovered four plastic packets holding 4,000 aluminium parcels, each filled with 10 Erimin 5 pills with an estimated total weight of 12,546 grammes.
Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said preliminary investigations found the suspect, who tested negative for drugs but has previous drug-related records, had been active since January.
“Police also seized a Perodua Axia car worth about RM15,000, while the man has been remanded until Wednesday (March 11) to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said in a statement, adding that the total value of the drugs and car seized amounted to an estimated RM2.73 million.
In a separate and unrelated case, police uncovered a cannabis processing laboratory after arresting two men, aged 27 and 55, in raids on March 6 and March 7.
During a raid on a car park area, police arrested one man and later seized a large haul of cannabis products from his home, including flowers, biscuits, chocolate, and liquid for vape pods.
Azizee said police also found several chemicals and equipment believed to be used to process marijuana at the location.
Following that raid, police arrested another man believed to be an accomplice at a separate location, also seizing a Proton Saga car and RM7,500 in cash.
The two suspects in this case, who both tested positive for drugs and had prior criminal records, have been remanded until March 13 to assist in investigations under Section 39B.
