Perak’s fish landings hit 333,984 tonnes last year, ranking it among Malaysia’s top producers and supporting a new affordable sales initiative across all districts

SUNGAI SIPUT: Perak recorded 333,984 tonnes of fish landings last year, placing it among the country’s major producers.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the strong output strengthens the state’s capacity to streamline national fish distribution more efficiently.

“When production is strong and distribution is well organised, catches reach consumers fresh, while fishermen enjoy a more stable and sustainable market,” he said.

He was speaking at the launch of the Perak Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Affordable Fish Sale initiative.

Saarani said the initiative will be rolled out across all 12 districts, with five permanent sites in each district designated as main sales points.

Sales will also be held after Friday prayers at selected mosques to expand community access.

To further widen outreach, mobile sales using tents, three-wheeled motorcycles and lorries will be conducted at least three times weekly in selected areas.

“In total, more than 1,000 sales sessions are targeted throughout 2026, reflecting a continuous and structured implementation rather than a short-term measure,” he said.

A local resident, Tun Saliha Nasarudin, 60, said the initiative has helped ease her daily expenses.

She bought squid, prawns and fish for a week for about RM50, compared with RM140 at wet markets.

“I hope this initiative continues, especially ahead of the festive season,” she said.
