BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police seized 38 motorcycles during an integrated operation targeting illegal street racing at the Kubang Semang Toll Plaza early this morning.
The Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters said 80 motorcycles were inspected and 179 summonses issued for various traffic offences.
The operation aimed to curb ‘mat rempit’ activities and reduce accidents involving motorcyclists. It forms part of broader enforcement efforts to improve highway safety.
“The stretch of the BKE between the Kubang Semang interchange and the toll plaza has become a weekend hotspot for youths engaging in illegal racing, raising safety concerns among highway users,” read a police Facebook post.
The post added that many riders were found speeding in car lanes, riding against traffic, and performing dangerous stunts.
They also created excessive noise with modified exhausts, posing risks to themselves and other motorists.
The operation was conducted by the SPT Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division.
They were assisted by the Penang Contingent Traffic Department, Bukit Aman Highway Patrol, the SPT Narcotics Division and PLUS Auxiliary Police.
