Pope Leo XIV calls for an immediate ceasefire and dialogue to end the violence in the Middle East, expressing particular concern for Lebanon’s situation.
VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV renewed his urgent appeal for peace in the Middle East. He called for an immediate ceasefire and the reopening of dialogue during his weekly Angelus prayer.
“Dear brothers and sisters, for two weeks the peoples of the Middle East have suffered the atrocious violence of war,” the pontiff said. He expressed his closeness to all those who have lost loved ones in attacks on civilian infrastructure.
The Pope stated that thousands of innocent people have been killed and countless others displaced. He highlighted the situation in Lebanon as a particular cause for concern.
“On behalf of the Christians of the Middle East and of all women and men of goodwill, I address those responsible for this conflict,” he said in Italian. He implored leaders to cease fire and reopen paths of dialogue.
“Violence can never lead to the justice, stability and peace that people await,” Pope Leo XIV concluded. His appeal underscores the Vatican’s deep concern over the escalating conflict.
