Former UTP vice-chancellor Prof Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib takes helm at Malaysia Board of Technologists, succeeding Prof Emeritus Siti Hamisah Tapsir

PUTRAJAYA: Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib has been appointed as the third President of the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT). His appointment, effective today, was announced by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Chang Lih Kang.

Mohamed Ibrahim succeeds Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir. MBOT stated that the appointment reflects the government’s confidence in his leadership and experience to drive the nation’s technology and technical sector development.

“MBOT is confident that this new leadership will continue to enhance the institution’s role as a professional body supporting talent development and professional recognition in the technology and technical fields,” the board said in a statement.

The new president is an academic and professional figure in chemical engineering with extensive experience in higher education, research and technology development. He holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Honours) from the University of New South Wales, Australia.

He furthered his studies at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in the United Kingdom, earning a Master’s and a Doctor of Philosophy in Process Integration.

Mohamed Ibrahim served as Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) from 2018 to 2025. He played a key role in strengthening the institution’s academic excellence and global reputation.

He began his academic career as a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia before joining UTP in 1997. Throughout his tenure there, he held various key leadership positions including Director of Research and Consultancy, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

Prior to his appointment as MBOT President, Mohamed Ibrahim also served as a Board Member of MBOT. He contributed to the development and empowerment of the technologist and technician profession in Malaysia.
