Waste at Putrajaya’s Ramadan Bazaar in Presint 3 drops nearly 47%, with over 1 tonne of surplus food rescued under SWCorp’s MySaveFood programme.
PETALING JAYA: Total waste generated at the Ramadan Bazaar in Putrajaya, Presint 3, dropped by nearly 47% this year compared with the same period last year.
In a statement, the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) said data comparing one week of bazaar operations in 2025 and 2026 showed that 38.70 tonnes of waste were recorded in 2026, down from 73.57 tonnes in 2025 — a reduction of 34.87 tonnes.
“The reduction reflects improved waste control through education, facility provision and continuous engagement efforts under our ‘Value Food, Avoid Waste’ campaign,” it said.
SWCorp also highlighted that between Feb 23 and 27, a total of 1,028.7 kilogrammes of surplus food was rescued and redistributed to those in need through the MySaveFood@Ramadan programme.
It said the campaign supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3, which aims to halve global per capita food waste by 2030.
“Although total solid waste disposed of during Ramadan 2025 increased by 34.09% compared with 2024, the average food waste disposed of during Ramadan declined by 15.24% compared with non-fasting months.
“Awareness campaigns and the MySaveFood programme successfully rescued more than 60 tonnes of surplus food nationwide throughout 2024 and 2025,” it said.
SWCorp urged the public to practise moderation in spending, prepare food in appropriate quantities, maintain food hygiene to prolong shelf life, and reduce single-use plastics by bringing reusable containers and bags.
“Ramadan teaches us to appreciate sustenance. Value food as a blessing, not merely a choice,” it said.
The bazaar, which houses about 290 food traders, was equipped with four units of dedicated liquid waste bins for gravy and beverages, MGB120L and MGB660L bins, Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) containers, 126 units of 3R segregation bins, as well as a used cooking oil collection initiative at fried food stalls.
The engagement session for SWCorp’s “Value Food, Avoid Waste” campaign, held today, was officiated by its chairman, Hee Loy Sian, and organised in collaboration with Putrajaya Corporation, Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, Youth Volunteers of GEMA Malaysia and related agencies.
Also present were Putrajaya Corporation president Datuk Haji Mohd Sakeri Abdul Kadir and SWCorp CEO Khalid Mohamed.
