A 64-year-old retiree in Pahang lost over RM328,000 after a scammer posing as a police officer threatened him with arrest.

KUANTAN: A retiree was defrauded of more than RM328,000 after falling victim to a phone scam where the perpetrator impersonated a police officer.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 64-year-old victim received a WhatsApp call last month from someone claiming to be an officer from Putrajaya.

The caller alleged the man was involved in fraud and would be arrested, instructing him to open two new bank accounts for purported monitoring purposes.

“The victim transferred his savings into the accounts on Feb 5 as instructed and shared his banking details with the suspect,” Yahaya stated.

The victim only realised he had been scammed after checking his accounts and finding them empty, while also being unable to contact the suspect.

He subsequently lodged a police report at the Rompin district police headquarters.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
