From indie film acclaim to Marvel blockbusters, Ryan Coogler’s Oscar win for ‘Sinners’ cements his status as a defining Hollywood storyteller.

HOLLYWOOD: Ryan Coogler’s cinematic journey has spanned intimate indie drama, cultural blockbusters, and now Oscar glory. The filmmaker won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his genre-bending horror period piece, “Sinners.”

The Warner Bros. film, starring his frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan as twins in 1930s Mississippi, became a box office smash. It earned nearly US$370 million worldwide.

“I’m very nervous and they’re gonna play me off. I grew up in Oakland, California, and we can talk a lot,” Coogler said during his acceptance speech. “This is an incredible honor.”

“Sinners” shattered the record for most Academy Awards nominations for a single film with 16. It ultimately won four awards, including Best Actor for Jordan and Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw.

Coogler’s path to Hollywood’s A-list began far from a film set. He initially intended to major in chemistry in college before a creative writing course sparked his interest in screenwriting.

A gift of screenwriting software from his girlfriend Zinzi, now his wife and production partner, further kindled his ambition. “When football began to feel like a chapter he might be closing, I could see he was looking for a place to pour that same energy into, and filmmaking was it,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

His first feature, 2013’s “Fruitvale Station,” recounted the real-life police shooting of Oscar Grant. The film earned multiple awards and marked his first collaboration with Michael B. Jordan.

He followed with the “Rocky” spin-off “Creed” in 2015. Three years later, he released “Black Panther,” a landmark film for Black representation that won three Oscars.

The 2022 sequel was reshaped by the death of star Chadwick Boseman. “Me and Chad were getting closer, so it was like a wound to the heart,” Coogler told The Hollywood Reporter.

“Sinners” is perhaps his most personal project, sparked by a desire to learn about a great-uncle who introduced him to the blues. “I did feel more vulnerable,” Coogler told The New York Times about the experience.

In the film, Jordan’s twin brothers return to Mississippi dreaming of opening a juke joint. Their dreams collide with the ghosts of slavery, white supremacy, and vampires used as a metaphor for exploitation.

“I see Ryan the most in this movie,” Jordan told The Hollywood Reporter. Upcoming projects for Coogler include a third “Black Panther” film and a new cinematic take on “The X-Files.”
