Sabah is implementing strategic energy projects to ensure stable electricity supply, including grid interconnection and renewable energy development

TUARAN: The Sabah state government is intensifying efforts to enhance the state’s energy security through various strategic projects. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said this is crucial for ensuring a stable, sustainable and resilient electricity supply to support economic growth.

He expressed the government’s full support for initiatives by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) to improve service efficiency and upgrade infrastructure. These continuous efforts include increasing power generation capacity and strengthening transmission and distribution networks.

A comprehensive strategy is being implemented in phases through the Sabah Energy Council and related agencies. The plan covers short, medium and long-term initiatives to improve service quality for consumers statewide.

Key projects involve developing new power generation with a more diverse energy mix. This includes using gas-based plants as a transitional source alongside expanding renewable energy.

Modern energy storage technologies like Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are also being adopted. Pumped-storage hydropower is another component of the state’s modernisation plan.

The Sabah-Sarawak Power Grid Interconnection Project launched earlier this year will further strengthen supply stability. Hajiji said this will gradually reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based generation.

“It will also increase Sabah’s electricity reserve margin and strengthen investor confidence in the reliability of the state’s power supply,” he added. He was speaking at a Ramadan event at the At-Taqwa Mosque grounds here.

The recent launch of the 15-megawatt Solar Project in Tuaran represents another important step. This project increases the state’s electricity supply capacity while aligning with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040.

SE-RAMP2040 emphasises renewable energy development and diversification of energy sources. “This effort sends a clear signal that Sabah is committed to strengthening the state’s energy security,” Hajiji stated.

He noted that without stable and sufficient energy supply, attracting high-impact investments would be difficult. Developing value-added industries also depends on reliable power infrastructure
