World number one Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina will clash in a blockbuster Miami Open semi-final, renewing their rivalry after meeting in the Indian Wells final.
ARYNA Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina will face off in a highly anticipated Miami Open semi-final on Thursday. The clash is a rematch of the Indian Wells final, which Sabalenka won to claim the title.
World number one Sabalenka advanced by defeating American Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 6-4. She is now aiming to complete the coveted ‘Sunshine Double’ of winning both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season.
“It’s definitely going to be a battle,” Sabalenka said in an on-court interview. “We push each other to the limit and we always bring the best tennis.”
The defending champion from Belarus improved her season record to 21-1 with the victory. She also holds a 9-7 career edge over her next opponent.
Earlier, Rybakina rallied from a set down to beat Jessica Pegula 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was her fifth consecutive win over the American and secured her third Miami Open semi-final appearance.
“It’s always very difficult matches with Jessica,” Rybakina said. “I’m happy that I managed to bounce back and turn it around in the second set.”
The other semi-final will see American Coco Gauff take on Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic. The winner will advance to the final of the WTA 1000 event.
