Sarawak Premier Abang Johari highlights Aidilfitri as a time to strengthen bonds and celebrate diversity, while outlining the state’s development goals
KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on the people to use the Aidilfitri festive season to strengthen ties and appreciate the diversity that defines the state’s identity.
In his Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 message, he said the tradition of open houses symbolises inclusivity and goodwill among different races and religions.
“This is our uniqueness — living in diversity, yet united in a shared spirit of togetherness,” he said.
He urged the people not to neglect the values of unity and harmony while pursuing progress.
Abang Johari, fondly known as Abang Jo, said he and his family would not host an open house this year as a mark of respect for his late wife, Puan Sri Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, who passed away in June last year.
He added that Sarawak is at an important phase in its development journey towards realising its 2030 vision.
The premier said the state is undergoing a critical phase in upgrading its road infrastructure and basic amenities like water, electricity and internet.
These efforts must align with strategic initiatives to transform Sarawak’s economy into a high-income one through technology, innovation and sustainability.
The state government is also placing strong emphasis on exploring Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
“We want Sarawak’s younger generation not only to be technology users, but also creators and leaders in the field,” he said.
