KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — The Selangor government is ramping up efforts to strengthen its position as the local aerospace and aviation hub with the goal of housing up to 70 per cent of the nation’s operations in the state, said Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the state is now home to the largest aerospace and aviation operations, with around 67 per cent market share following the recent launch of the 600-acre Selangor Aero Park (SAP) near KL International Airport (KLIA) Aeropolis.

Amirudin noted that the SAP development has seen a strong take-up rate by the industry, as to date, a total of 100 acres (40.47 hectares) of the park have already been occupied.

“From the promotion that we did at the Paris Airshow recently, we are confident that the first 200 acres out of 600 acres allocated can be booked and completed by end of this year, or at least by the first quarter of 2026,” he said during a dialogue session with industry players and experts at the Selangor Aerospace Summit (SAS) 2025 on the sidelines of the 9th Selangor International Business Summit 2025 today.

Amirudin added that the state government is exploring other opportunities to elevate the aerospace and aviation industry in Selangor by focusing on the potential of unmanned aircraft and drones technology.

He said the state government has already allocated 1,000 acres in Kuala Selangor, right next to the Universiti Selangor (Unisel) campus for the purpose of developing a drone excellence centre.

“Perhaps we can become the main player of drones technology in Southeast Asia and among the top five players in Asia in the next 10 years,” he suggested.

Looking ahead, Amirudin believed that the way forward for the aerospace and aviation industry in the state is to look beyond building manufacturing facilities as well as maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) ecosystem.

“The way forward definitely is not just on manufacturing because the development of human capital is also one of our focuses for the sustainability of the industry and the ecosystem.

“Not just MRO or manufacturing facilities will open in SAP, we are also looking at building schools and training centres to train our human capital for the industry,” he said. — Bernama
