Serbia and Sweden have advised their citizens to depart Iran as US President Donald Trump considers military action over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

BELGRADE: Serbia and Sweden have urged their citizens in Iran to leave the country. The advisories follow US President Donald Trump’s threat of military action over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Serbia’s foreign ministry issued a statement overnight from Friday to Saturday. It recommended against travel to Iran and urged those already there to depart “as soon as possible”.

The Balkan nation had initially advised its nationals to leave in mid-January. This coincided with a bloody crackdown by Iranian authorities on mass protests.

Separately, Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard made a “strong appeal” on social media platform X. She directed the message to Swedish citizens currently in Iran.

Iran stated on Friday it hoped for a quick nuclear deal with the United States. The programme has long been a major point of contention between the two nations.

Trump, however, said he was “considering” a limited military strike if negotiations fail. This statement came after he ordered a major naval build-up in the Middle East to pressure Tehran
