A student’s viral Threads post of a harsh WhatsApp exchange with her mum sparks sympathy in Malaysia.
A Threads post showing a tense WhatsApp exchange between a university student and her mother has gone viral, sparking heated discussions among Malaysians online.
The post was shared by @anothersideoffar._ on Threads, where the user posted screenshots of a conversation that appeared to show her mother scolding her over a joke about asking her father to sponsor a bus ticket home.
In the caption, the user wrote:
“The biggest enemy of a mother: the eldest child who can no longer help support the family financially.”
She later added:
“I actually have money to buy the bus ticket. Everyone, please don’t offer me money for the ticket. I just wanted to feel loved.”
The post quickly gained traction, racking up 22,600 likes, more than 7,600 comments and over 4,000 shares, with many users expressing sympathy for the student.
As the screenshots spread, social media users flooded the comments section with reactions, advice and emotional responses.
Some questioned the mother’s behaviour.
Charmebeautyofficial asked “Is she your biological mum or stepmum? The way she replies is strange.”
riezforester wrote “Sorry to say this, but your mum seems to have a problem. She sounds like she sees you as a rival for your dad’s attention rather than her child.”
“Aunty wants to ask, are you adopted? Because I cannot understand how parents could treat their child like this. This is not normal,” Faszt_alin_adan commented.
Others offered encouragement and support.
Tashamohdnoor wrote “Don’t worry, you’re doing the right thing. Sometimes it’s better not to ask for anything if we know people don’t want to help. Just focus on your studies and take care of your mental health.”
“Hopefully this isn’t just content. If it’s real, I hope the mother’s heart will soften and she will appreciate the first person who was once in her womb. Stay strong,” keroll_anuar commented.
“As a mother myself, it makes me sad to read this. Children never asked to be born into this world. I hope you succeed in life. Study hard,” rosminicd added.
Others said the student’s calm replies in the screenshots showed remarkable patience.
Zaffhezry00 wrote “Now you see why Allah chose her for this test and not us. She replies so calmly even though her mum says so many harsh things. Those of us reading it are already furious.”
Some commenters also shared their own experiences of strained family relationships.
balqis.fauzi: “You’re not alone. I was once in the same situation. I didn’t speak to my mum for years and moved to another state. As children, all we can do is pray that our mothers’ hearts soften.”
Meanwhile, others reacted more strongly after reading the exchange.
cikm92: “If it were me, I’d say: ‘I never asked to be born. You and dad chose to have me.’ Growing up with parents who show favouritism leaves wounds that last into adulthood.”
“Study hard, get a good job, and focus on your own future,” dirafdias added.
