Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah urges fans to behave with discipline and avoid drugs, highlighting football’s role in uniting Malaysians
THE Sultan of Selangor has issued a firm reminder to football supporters to uphold discipline and proper conduct at all times.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said fans must watch their behaviour both inside and outside stadiums to protect the dignity of their team and state.
He urged supporters to avoid any actions that could result in punishment or fines, advising them to channel grievances through proper channels instead.
“Stay away from drugs, which can damage morals and thinking. Spirited support must be accompanied by discipline and wisdom,” the Sultan said.
His Royal Highness made these remarks at the launch of the book ‘Gemilang: Sejarah Perjalanan Bola Sepak Selangor’ during the Hari Legasi Merah Kuning celebration.
The Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, was also present at the event.
Sultan Sharafuddin, who is the patron of Selangor FC, described football as the premier sporting instrument for uniting Malaysia’s multi-racial society.
He stated that the sport upholds core values of respect and sportsmanship despite the intense rivalry between teams.
“This is the spirit of football that we should portray and inherit,” the Sultan said.
He also expressed hope that Selangor FC would continue to progress with confidence and preserve its successful legacy for future generations.
The Sultan reflected on Selangor’s dominant era from the 1960s to the 1980s, when the team excelled nationally and internationally without imported players.
He attributed this historic success to a focus on scouting local talent from every district across the state.
That approach was combined with a strong emphasis on discipline, determination, and a genuine love for the team.
“This approach helped produce players with passion and determination and a strong emotional bond between the players and supporters,” said the Sultan.
