Perak prisons run tahfiz programmes to rehabilitate inmates through Quranic studies, fostering positive character change and discipline.

BATU GAJAH: Tahfiz centres in Perak’s prisons are proving an effective rehabilitation tool, helping inmates deepen their Quranic understanding and develop positive character.

State Prisons director Fayrouz Ahmad Zawawi said the initiative is part of broader rehabilitation programmes offering religious knowledge during incarceration.

Two centres currently operate in Perak at the Batu Gajah Correctional Centre and Tapah Prison.

The Batu Gajah centre, Akademi Azzahrah, launched in 2024 and currently has six inmates in its tahfiz programme.

Fayrouz said this effort is part of a plan to establish tahfiz schools in prisons across every state.

Participation is voluntary for inmates genuinely interested in advancing their Quranic knowledge.

Inmates without prior religious education are guided by department teachers and the Perak Islamic Religious Council.

“We can see positive changes in terms of their discipline and attitude throughout the programme,” Fayrouz said.

He added that authorities will continue identifying inmates with potential for future participation in the programme.
