Viral post exposes alleged illegal parking racket in KL as woman refuses demands for payment in public area
A Thread post by @briqish has gone viral after she shared her encounter with an alleged illegal parking attendant in front of Chambers Residence, sparking widespread reactions among Malaysians online.
In her post, she claimed that after parking in a public area, a foreign man — accompanied by a local man — approached and asked for money, allegedly saying he was “looking after” the parking.
“My husband was angry. This is a public area, why should we have to pay?” she wrote, adding that the man insisted he was guarding the car. Her husband refused, and fearing something might happen to their vehicle, she recorded its condition and immediately called the police.
The post quickly drew strong reactions from netizens, many sharing similar experiences.
kucingangkasalepas commented, “I once went to buy shawarma in KL at night. I parked near a busy area and a guy suddenly ‘helped’ to guide my parking. Then he said parking was paid, around RM10 to RM20. I was shocked and just paid because I was stunned. My friend and I were both women and were afraid something might happen to us. Stay safe everyone!”
lit_alalita shared a more worrying experience, writing, “I experienced this too. I already paid one person. After getting out of the car, another came. I refused to pay twice. The parking was free but I had to pay you? After I came back, my car was scratched.”
Others pointed out that paying these individuals could result in double charges.
ryehannnn said, “If we pay them, we still have to pay the council coupon because they are not paying the council. So it becomes double payment.”
“Near Jalan Sultan, there are local men guarding parking at night in public places, charging up to RM5 to RM10. Even if you just stop to take away food, they will follow to make sure you do not park. In the end, I changed my plan and ate somewhere else,” luminatesla added.
Some praised the woman and her husband for standing firm.
wmfh1988 wrote, “Good job you and your husband stood your ground.”
lkaiting commented, “I totally agree with reporting to the police. The way they are doing it is no different from beggars.”
“I agree with calling the police and appreciate the police for taking this matter seriously. If nobody takes action, it becomes a habit,” stavropolich added.
