WASHINGTON: Former US president Donald Trump said Israel carried out an attack on Iran’s South Pars gas field without American or Qatari involvement. He issued a warning that further Israeli strikes would only occur if Iran attacked Qatar, in which case the US would respond.
“The United States knew nothing about this particular attack, and the country of Qatar was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it, nor did it have any idea that it was going to happen,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. Israel has not publicly claimed responsibility for the reported strike on the world’s largest natural gas deposit, which Iran shares with Qatar.
According to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Axios, Trump was aware of and supported Israel’s plan in advance. Iran had stated that Israel struck its South Pars facilities, describing it as a major escalation in the ongoing conflict.
In retaliation, Tehran promised attacks on Gulf energy targets and fired missiles at Saudi Arabia. It also struck Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, a major energy hub.
Qatar condemned Israel for what it called a “dangerous and irresponsible” attack on the Iranian facilities. Doha also rebuked Iran for a “flagrant breach” of international law and expelled two senior Iranian diplomats.
Trump further commented on the situation, stating Iran had “unjustifiably and unfairly attacked a portion of Qatar’s LNG Gas facility.” He issued a direct warning to Tehran regarding any action against Qatar.
“NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar,” Trump wrote. He added that if Iran did so, the US would “massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field,” with or without Israel’s consent.
The US and Israel launched a war on Iran in late February. The conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties in Iran, including its supreme leader and security chief.
Tehran has responded with attacks against Israel and Gulf nations hosting US military bases. The ongoing war has severely disrupted oil supplies and shaken global markets, causing a significant surge in energy prices.
