KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile, Malaysia’s newest 5G network provider, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia) to jointly pursue digital innovation and co-create advanced technological solutions.
The collaboration will also focus on fostering a sustainable innovation ecosystem by leveraging 5G-Advanced (5G-A), artificial intelligence (AI), and other related emerging technologies.
Further, both companies will accelerate the development of cutting-edge applications in line with U Mobile’s digital transformation goals and reaffirm their commitment to driving Malaysia’s digital economy.
The collaboration includes a 5G 3.5GHz dual-carrier trial to assess and demonstrate the efficient utilisation of spectrum resources, incorporating 5G-A features such as 3CC carrier aggregation.
The outcome of this trial aims to support evidence-based spectrum planning, inform policy considerations, and enable deployment of next-gen services.
Both companies will also jointly design and develop 5G-A-enabled gaming service experiences, leveraging advanced technologies such as 5G network slicing to significantly enhance gaming performance through improved latency, stability, and overall service quality.
U Mobile chief technology officer Woon Ooi Yuen said the telco provider is continuously seeking to enhance its ULTRA5G experience as Malaysia’s newest 5G network provider.
“This latest MoU with Huawei Malaysia is in line with our digital transformation
goals, as we will be pursuing various 5G-A and AI innovations, including a 3.5GHz 5G trial to improve spectrum utilisation and enhance gaming experiences through 5G network slicing.
“We will also work together on integrating AI in our network operations, targeting to move to Autonomous Network Level 4, transitioning from a human-dependent, reactive maintenance model to a more proactive approach due to automated management.
“Apart from the reduction in operational expenditure and network complexity, it also means improved network reliability, consistency and enhanced ULTRA5G experiences for our customers,” he said.
Under this MoU, the parties will further explore the adoption of AI within U Mobile’s network to advance intelligent, autonomous network operations.
This evolution is essential to managing the increasing complexity of network requirements driven by new digital services and business models, ensuring consistent, superior service quality for users.
Huawei Malaysia deputy CEO Zac Chow said this collaboration with U Mobile will unlock significant gains in spectrum efficiency and deliver a faster, more stable user experience for users.

U Mobile and Huawei Malaysia have conducted several successful 5G-A use cases, and in December 2025, based on publicly available information, the companies achieved a global first by demonstrating 5G-A’s capability to support high-demand home broadband in dense urban settings using Single-User-8-Layer technology.
This innovation enables significantly more data to be delivered to a single household simultaneously, resulting in faster and more stable connections.
The trial was conducted in a high-density residential tower in Kuala Lumpur, where peak download speeds of up to 3.2Gbps were achieved using only 100 MHz of C-band spectrum, the fastest speed currently achievable for that spectrum configuration on a commercial network.
These results were powered by the Single-User-8-Layer Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), the world’s first commercial device supporting the globally recognised 3GPP New Radio (NR) MIMO standard for 5G.
This latest MoU was signed at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona by Woon and Chow, witnessed by senior representatives from both organisations.
