UMNO Kelantan cancels its state-level Aidilfitri open house to support the PM’s call for austerity amid global economic uncertainty
KOTA BHARU: UMNO Kelantan has cancelled its state-level Aidilfitri open house event this year.
The move is in support of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s call to cultivate prudent spending practices.
State UMNO Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub said the step is preparation for any potential financial crisis due to the global economic situation.
A planned breaking-of-fast event at the end of Ramadan has also been postponed.
On March 11, Anwar said all ministries, agencies and government-linked companies should not hold Aidilfitri open houses this year.
This austerity measure follows global economic uncertainty due to conflict in West Asia.
The Prime Minister said the cabinet-agreed decision aims to send a clear message of the government’s commitment to a more modest and prudent spending approach.
Regarding the state’s economy, Ahmad Jazlan said Kelantan’s economic growth remains weak without help from the Federal Government and the private sector.
He compared Kelantan’s development to more advanced states like Johor, Pahang which records over RM1 billion in revenue, and tourism-viable Melaka.
