Malaysian philanthropist Chee Heng Kuan reveals most donations come from hawkers and homemakers, not the rich.

A Malaysian philanthropist recently highlighted that not everyone who is wealthy is willing to donate, while it is often “ordinary folk” who open their hearts — and wallets — to help those in need.

In a Facebook post, Chee Heng Kuan, also known as Uncle Kentang, shared a personal anecdote after listening to a woman’s frustration over a wealthy individual who allegedly refused to donate wheelchairs to a government clinic.

“Being rich in the pocket does not necessarily mean one is rich at heart,” he said.

According to the post, the wealthy man reportedly remarked that providing such facilities should be the government’s responsibility.

“I told her to leave the rich friend alone. Do not disturb him. He is poorer than many others who have hearts

“I told her that 99% of our donors come from hawkers, aunties, homemakers — ordinary folk — and not from the rich and famous.

“These ordinary folk can feel the rhythm of the poor, the sick, and the hungry. I thank all who have so far walked alongside us in building a better life and country,” he added.

The philanthropist’s post drew mixed reactions, with some users siding with the wealthy man’s stance, while others agreed that having abundant wealth does not necessarily equate to generosity.

“Not every rich person is rich at heart, and not everyone acts the same way. Many give quietly and sincerely, in their own ways. For those who doubt or question, just let it be. We simply do what we can, with a sincere heart,” one user commented.

Another wrote: “I think we should respect individual choices and not place such expectations when it comes to fundraising. He may be donating to another cause that resonates more with him.”
