USM and Micron launch a first-of-its-kind industry certification to develop skilled talent for Malaysia’s growing semiconductor sector.

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia has launched a strategic partnership with Micron Memory Malaysia through a new Semiconductor Assembly and Test Professional certification.

The SAT Pro programme is designed to produce a specialised and competitive workforce for the advanced technology sector.

USM is the first Malaysian university to offer such an industry-driven semiconductor certification.

Deputy vice-chancellor Azlan Amran said the initiative introduces a holistic, industry-driven learning approach. This ensures the university’s curriculum remains relevant and responsive to real market needs.

He stated the certification aligns with the National Semiconductor Strategy to develop a highly skilled workforce. It strengthens USM’s role as a strategic talent catalyst for national economic growth.

The programme strengthens the curriculum through experiential learning and professional recognition. Students will master both theory and technical skills while gaining real-world industry exposure.

The collaboration includes training to improve staff competencies and the introduction of two new elective courses. Azlan also highlighted appreciation for Micron’s commitment to talent development and research.

Micron vice-president Ramu Iyer said the semiconductor industry is the backbone of technologies like AI and smart automotive. The company captures almost 49% of the global automotive data storage market.

He said SAT Pro was introduced to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The programme, previously implemented in India, is now being expanded to Malaysia through this collaboration.

It will be delivered through a combination of virtual learning and practical training. To date, 27 lecturers and 104 USM students have already participated in the programme.

Nationally, more than 270 participants from over 10 universities are involved. The initiative marks a progressive step in empowering local talent development for the high-value semiconductor industry.
