Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab, a key Maduro ally, has resigned his post less than two months after the former president’s removal by US forces

CARACAS: Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab has resigned from his post.

The National Assembly announced the resignation of the key ally of ousted president Nicolas Maduro on Wednesday.

Saab had held the position since 2017. He was frequently criticised by the opposition for allegedly ignoring human rights abuses under Maduro’s rule.

He had condemned Maduro’s capture in a US special forces raid on January 3 as a violation of international law. Saab had also called for Maduro’s release.

Following his resignation, the National Assembly named Saab as the interim public defender. He replaces Alfredo Ruiz Angulo, who vacated the post.

Maduro was succeeded by his former deputy, Delcy Rodriguez. Rodriguez has shown a willingness to work with Washington since taking power.

She has opened Venezuela’s vast oil reserves to private investment. Rodriguez has also eased some of the previous government’s repressive measures.

Her administration has pushed through an amnesty for citizens. The amnesty covers those charged or imprisoned for resisting 27 years of socialist rule under Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chavez.
