A viral Threads post has sparked outrage after Malaysians claimed foreigners were allegedly able to buy subsidised packet cooking oil without using the ECCOS system, while locals must register and scan their IC.

A viral Thread post by @_.itssyaaaaa has gone viral after highlighting alleged irregularities in the sale of subsidised packet cooking oil at a local supermarket, sparking widespread anger among Malaysians online.

The post quickly drew attention online, with many netizens questioning the effectiveness of existing controls and enforcement, especially as Malaysians are required to scan an app and present identification to buy the controlled item. Several commenters called for stricter enforcement at supermarket level.

Many netizens questioned the purpose of the ECCOS system, which requires Malaysians to register and scan their MyKad when purchasing subsidised packet cooking oil.

syawalsyahdan wrote, “So what is the point of the app they ask us to fill in?”

“The app was developed for Malaysians to use. Foreigners do not need it but can still buy it. Malaysia has only one problem – enforcement is too weak. That is the real cause of smuggling and other issues. But the excuse is used to increase petrol and diesel prices, supposedly because of smuggling. This is an example. The root cause is enforcement,” brokenhidn commented.

Some claimed they had personally witnessed similar situations.

enyrazy shared, “I have seen foreigners buy packet cooking oil without going through ECCOS. The cashier just scanned it without asking anything. I cannot remember where, but it was at the end of last year. Strange how it was allowed.”

“I searched everywhere for packet cooking oil and could not find any. I am a Malaysian citizen with a Malaysian IC and passport. What did I do wrong?” trombonepatah added.

Others alleged that the issue was ongoing in certain areas.

ainaintizara said, “Here it is the same because it is a factory area, so many foreigners buy goods there. Better just report it. The owner does not seem to care.”

Several users urged immediate action from the authorities.

mr.nazaa_ commented, “Report to KPDN so the company gets fined.”

db_sticker_online wrote, “KPDNKK must take immediate action against this supermarket for allowing the sale of packet oil to foreigners.”

“What are they scanning with? That shop is really outrageous. KPDN, take action,” chewanani added.
