PETALING JAYA: As industries across Southeast Asia undergo rapid transformation, business leaders say building resilient ecosystems and future-ready organisations increasingly depends on inclusive leadership, strong talent pipelines and collaboration across sectors.

According to Linda Tan, president of SEMI Southeast Asia, the region’s semiconductor industry is evolving into a deeply interconnected ecosystem spanning manufacturing, research and development, advanced packaging and global headquarters functions.

“Southeast Asia is not a collection of isolated markets; it is an increasingly integrated semiconductor region,” she said.

SEMI represents more than 3,800 companies across the global electronics supply chain, and Tan noted that strengthening connections between regional players and international partners is key to sustaining commercial growth.

“Our role is to strengthen this ecosystem by connecting member companies in Southeast Asia to the global supply chain so they remain competitive and can grow commercially,” she said.

With the region’s strategic importance in the global semiconductor value chain rising, Tan said the industry must increasingly collaborate across borders.

Through programmes, advocacy dialogues and working groups, SEMI facilitates collaboration between industry, government and academia on priorities such as talent development, sustainability and technology roadmaps.

“When Southeast Asia’s semiconductor ecosystem invests collectively in capability building and inclusive growth, the benefits are shared across the region, supporting a resilient ecosystem while enabling companies to scale globally,” she added.

Tan said industry platforms such as Semicon Southeast Asia also play a crucial role in strengthening engagement and investment flows across the sector.

“Semicon Southeast Asia is more than an exhibition. It is a strategic platform that drives industry engagement while supporting regional economic growth,” she said.

By hosting the event in key industry hubs such as Singapore and Malaysia, the event aligns closely with government priorities, including supply chain resilience, talent development and the creation of high-value jobs.

The association’s global network, built over more than five decades, also helps attract technology leaders, partners and investors from around the world.

“This cross-border collaboration strengthens Southeast Asia’s competitiveness and deepens its integration into the global semiconductor supply chain,” Tan said.

Beyond industry collaboration, leaders emphasise that organisational culture and talent strategies remain equally critical in ensuring businesses stay competitive.

Adrita Datta, people and culture leader at British American Tobacco Malaysia (BATMalaysia), said aligning people strategies with business priorities is key to sustaining growth in a rapidly evolving environment.

“HR creates the greatest impact when it is deeply connected to how the business creates value and what it needs to grow sustainably,” she said.

Having worked across multiple Asia-Pacific markets, Adrita said close collaboration with commercial, supply chain and marketing teams allows human resource strategies to anticipate future business needs.

“At BAT, transformation isn’t just a buzzword – it is the reality we operate in,” she said. “We work closely with business leaders to anticipate the skills, leadership capabilities and culture required for the next phase of growth.”

She added that empowering employees and building inclusive workplaces also deliver measurable business impact.

At BAT Malaysia, initiatives such as enhanced maternity and paternity leave, flexible working arrangements and structured employee listening programmes are designed to support employees through different life stages while maintaining strong engagement.

“We’ve also normalised conversations around topics once considered taboo, such as caregiving and menopause,” Adrita said.

These efforts have contributed to a diverse workforce representing more than 20 languages and multiple industries, while women now hold 43% of managerial roles in the organisation.

“When inclusion is embedded into everyday systems, conversations and leadership behaviours, it delivers sustained impact for both people and the business,” Adrita said.

Across sectors, both leaders agree that the region’s future competitiveness will depend heavily on talent development.

For the semiconductor industry, Tan said attracting young graduates into engineering and technology careers is essential to sustaining long-term growth.

Through initiatives such as TalentConnect, career fairs, mentoring sessions and regional student bootcamps, SEMI works with universities, governments and industry partners to help students understand the real-world opportunities within the sector.

“Semiconductors sit at the heart of technologies shaping the future, so choosing this industry means building the foundation of tomorrow,” she said.

Similarly, Adrita believes organisations must prioritise continuous learning and adaptability to stay competitive.

“Organisations today are navigating rapid shifts in technology, workforce expectations and business models,” she said. “Building a culture of lifelong learning and empowering employees to grow will be critical to staying future-ready.”

As Southeast Asia’s industries continue to expand and integrate into global value chains, leaders say collaboration, talent development and inclusive leadership will play a defining role in shaping sustainable growth across the region.
