Independent preacher Zamri Vinoth and activist Tamim Dahri cross into Thailand as police continue investigations
BANGKOK: Independent preacher Zamri Vinoth and activist Tamim Dahri entered Thailand through a southern border crossing on Thursday.
A Thai security source confirmed the pair used valid travel documents to cross at the Sungai Kolok entry point in Narathiwat, which borders Rantau Panjang in Kelantan.
“Preliminary reports indicate that both individuals are still in southern Thailand,” the source told Bernama.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed on Saturday that the two men had fled to Thailand.
He said efforts to trace them are being actively pursued with the assistance of Thai authorities.
Zamri is being investigated for remarks made at a gathering in the capital on February 7.
The Attorney-General’s Chambers has instructed for him to be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements conducive to public mischief.
A separate investigation into Zamri for remarks deemed insulting to the Indian community has been referred to the Penang Prosecution Office.
Charges are being sought under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 in that case.
Meanwhile, the investigation paper involving Tamim has been referred to the Kedah Prosecution Office.
He is being investigated for allegedly damaging a soolam, a sacred Hindu symbol, at a former temple site in Langkawi.
Instructions have been issued to charge him under Section 295 of the Penal Code.
