Singapore will charge a man after he placed over 1,000 silent calls to police hotlines in one week

A 37-year-old Singaporean man is scheduled to appear in court today after allegedly inundating police hotlines with over 1,000 silent calls in a single week. From April 21 through April 28, he is said to have rung up various neighbourhood police centres 1,035 times, hanging up the moment an officer answered.

According to the police, the accused took extensive measures to mask his identity—dialling from a foreign number and refusing to speak during each call. Officers from the Woodlands Police Division, which borders Johor, Malaysia, nonetheless traced the calls back to him. He was apprehended on May 11.

He now faces two counts: one for obstructing a public servant in their official duties, and another for obtaining a SIM card under another person’s details for criminal use.

If convicted of obstructing a public servant, he could be sentenced to up to six months’ imprisonment, fined S$2,500 (roughly RM7,800), or both. The charge of using a fraudulent SIM card carries a maximum penalty of three years’ jail time, a fine up to S$10,000 (about RM31,000), or both.

📊 Market Context & Insight

Investors may consider rental properties, affordable housing projects, commercial real estate, and Bursa-listed REITs. With increased urban migration driving rental demand, balancing physical assets with listed REITs can spread risk while tapping into growth potential.

💡 What This Means for Malaysian Investors

The Malaysian property market is influenced by urban growth in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Penang, government housing schemes like PR1MA, Bank Negara Malaysia’s interest rate policy, and major infrastructure developments such as the MRT3 and LRT expansions. REIT performance on Bursa Malaysia also mirrors wider economic trends.
