Kicok reaches Everest summit, strengthening Malaysia’s presence in elite mountaineering

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian mountaineer Mohd Khafiz Bachok, better known as Kicok, has successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 18, marking a significant achievement for Malaysian mountaineering and further cementing his standing among Southeast Asia’s most accomplished high-altitude climbers.

Kicok reached the 8,848.86-metre peak during what has been described as one of the most challenging Everest climbing seasons in recent years, with climbers facing difficult weather conditions, unstable icefalls and a delayed summit window.

His successful ascent followed weeks of preparation and a final summit push that began from Everest Base Camp on May 11.

The climbing route opened nearly three weeks later than expected due to severe weather, resulting in a compressed schedule and heightened competition among climbers attempting to reach the summit.

Despite the demanding conditions, Kicok navigated the treacherous terrain and changing mountain conditions to stand atop the world’s highest peak.

“This expedition carries the Malaysian spirit and the importance of chasing one’s dreams,” Kicok said after completing the climb.

“I hope all Malaysians will continue to push for success in whatever field they pursue,” he added.

The achievement adds another milestone to Kicok’s already distinguished mountaineering record.

He was previously part of the first Malaysian team to reach the summit of Mount Manaslu, the world’s eighth-highest mountain, and also became only the second Malaysian and fifth Southeast Asian climber to conquer K2, which is widely regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous mountains.

He is also among a small group of Southeast Asian climbers who have successfully conquered multiple peaks exceeding 8,000 metres.

The expedition was supported by SD Guthrie Berhad, whose president and group chief executive officer Mohd Haris Mohd Arshad said the climb reflected resilience and ambition.

“At Guthrie, we believe in supporting purposeful journeys that inspire resilience, ambition and national pride. Kicok’s successful summit and Margaret’s remarkable climb reflect the very spirit of perseverance we stand for,” he said.

The expedition also featured Malaysian climber Margaret Chew, who reached Camp Four at an altitude of 7,920 metres, the final stage before the summit push.

However, deteriorating weather conditions and safety concerns prompted her to make the decision to turn back before the summit attempt.

“I am not chasing summits. I am chasing lessons that each mountain will teach me,” Margaret said after returning safely to Everest Base Camp.

The 56-year-old adventurer had previously completed the Great Himalaya Trail High Route 5 Pass challenge and said her Everest journey was intended to inspire people, particularly women, to pursue ambitions regardless of age or circumstance.

The expedition journey of Kicok and Margaret will be documented in a one-hour film directed by Ahmad Yazid and produced by Rack Focus in collaboration with Red Communications Sdn Bhd.

Supported by documentary funding from the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), the programme is expected to be aired on Astro in August 2026.
