A new tower in Gua Tempurung ends blind spots on the North-South Expressway in Perak, state official confirms.
GOPENG: There are no stretches along the North-South Expressway (PLUS) in Perak currently experiencing complete telecommunications coverage disruptions or blind spots, said State Communications, Multimedia and NGO Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi
He said this was after a new telecommunications tower in the Gua Tempurung area began operations a month ago.
Mohd Azlan said the Gua Tempurung area had previously been identified as one of the main locations experiencing telecommunications coverage disruptions, especially for users travelling through hilly stretches of road from the north and south.
“The issue (coverage disruption) has now been resolved with the cooperation of various parties, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), PLUS Malaysia Berhad, telecommunications service providers and related agencies.
“We have placed Gua Tempurung as one of the hotspots for blind spot connectivity under the Perak State Telecommunications Coverage Issues Monitoring Committee, which was established in 2023,” he told reporters after inspecting the new telecommunications tower in Gua Tempurung here today.
Mohd Azlan said that apart from Gua Tempurung, the state government had previously addressed telecommunications coverage issues in the Menora Tunnel area.
“I believe there are no longer any areas with no connectivity at all.The only areas affected now are those with weak coverage due to terrain factors or certain obstacles, but they still have telecommunications connections,” he said.
According to him, the state government together with the MCMC and telecommunications service providers would continue to monitor coverage quality to ensure it complies with set standards and meets the needs of increasing highway users.
He said efforts to improve telecommunications coverage would continue from time to time, including at rest and service (R&R) areas which often experience congestion during the holiday season, as well as along the West Coast Expressway (WCE).
