Singapore’s prime minister, Lawrence Wong, is set to attend the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu on May 8, along with other ASEAN heads of state, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced on Wednesday. Discussions will centre on reinforcing regional commerce, energy and food resilience against the backdrop of persistent tensions in West Asia.
The PMO stated that delegates will seek strategies to fast-track the transition to renewable energy, mitigate supply-chain bottlenecks and curb surging fuel expenses tied to the West Asia scenario. Additionally, leaders will deliberate on strengthening partnerships with external stakeholders to pursue mutual objectives and maintain regional stability.
At the Summit’s sidelines, Mr Wong is scheduled for one-on-one discussions with various counterparts. He will be accompanied by his wife, Loo Tze Lui, and Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
As the chair for 2026, the Philippines will lead ASEAN—operating under the motto “Navigating Our Future, Together”—in organising over 650 engagements, encompassing two leaders’ summits and 24 ministerial conferences.
